To EDMW...
First of all, let me apologize for taking this long to reply, I happened to be working. I have to admit, I was very surprised to see the kind of responds you guys had regarding my simple blog post. I have to give it to you all though, you guys are a united bunch.
But look guys, I'm sticking to my point. I still do not think making comments that are not constructive and plain rude is helping anyone.
This is my point. You can choose to agree or disagree. I'm sure you are disagreeing right at this moment, even before you continue reading, but do let me speak my mind..
I know you guys ain't the most supportive of our TV industry. But hey, you guys are Singaporeans too. Why are you giving up on us?
Yes, I have to admit that we may not be as mighty as many other countries with our media industry, but keep in mind that we are young and do take note of our population count in relation to theirs. Before you start slamming me, I have to tell you that I'm not looking for excuses. I'm also tired with a lot of the bullshit that happens within the industry. The only difference between us is that- I'm not giving up, and all I'm asking for is that you to do the same.
You guys are right again. I'm not a big shot. And like some of you commented, I'm just a small time TV actor, a small fry perhaps. And I do feel powerless because the fact is that there is just this much I can do. But, I'm doing what I can and you guys can help by just giving us more chances and more space to grow. Take on a interest with the local film and TV scene and tell your friends on and offline when you see a good production in the theater or on TV. I know we have bad productions but who is to say we do not have good ones as well? You can hate it but you cannot deny that "The Little Nyonya" is a good production. With that and a few other productions, we have proven that we do have what it takes to make good projects.
Here, I'm done...I'm probably gonna get flooded with comments like "Your're a f**k face" after this post, but at least I will not feel like a pussy for not saying my piece.
Regarding the approval of comments, if you guys still think that I'm a typical boy next door artiste who can't take a beating, you can't be more wrong. Have you read the rest of my blog? I'm practically the furtherest thing there is to being politically correct. I welcome comments, so here is the deal. I'm gonna publish as many posts as I can, but please, lets keep it as civil as possible. I really do not mind harsh words like "balls, crap, ass, wau lao and at the right times even f**k", but lets keep away from all the LJ, CBB, KNNB. They can be a little hard on the eyes after a while...
Here is an example of a comment I published from the last entry.
"do not talk machiam the standard of local tv will rise if you work hard, the audience appreciate your work or more 'actors' like youself join the industry...
you are just a salaried employee like any other person in shenton way or loyang .. do not believe that you can contribute to the standard of local tv. it's at its bottom already ...
you better find a second job ..."
Just do keep it constructive alright.
PS- for those who have no idea what has been happening, here is the link to the first post -

Well said andie! Will support u :D
January 10, 2010 10:03 PMYou actually do make alot sense here. Its good to see what you are trying to achieve. I do agree with you that some productions are undeniably good. But not all. So keep up the good work and don't mind the trolling.
January 10, 2010 10:29 PMwell it's true that our industry is younger, but hey, singapore is young to begin with, if singapore can achieve its status today.
January 10, 2010 11:25 PMwhy can't TV industry pull up the socks and do the same?
I am sorry to say i find that our nation is young and the relative population sounds like just another excuse to me. Even though it might not be your idea to be finding an excuse.
Lastly, you don't ask for a chance, you earn and make use of chances.
If you need a constructive comment, here is one, Shut up and work hard and let your fruits of labour earn you rewards. No point talking so much, it isn't going to change anything.
agree with what u said.
January 11, 2010 12:01 AMeven major tv stations overseas took years to build themselves up.
if we dun give singapore media industry a chance, we r really shooting ourselves in the foot by killing an industry with much potential.
anyway it is up to the audience to perceive what is a good or bad show. singaporeans need to be less judgmental of our productions and enjoy them with an open mind. instead of comparing them with overseas productions from established tv companies.
you know ... giving a chance for local media industry to grow will probably only work if today is still an era where internet/pay tv is unheard of in Singapore.
January 11, 2010 3:00 AMThough we only have 1 tv station, the competition is really between the choices of entertainment we have.
Even the cheapest HP sold in 7-11 can provide some form of entertainment, and what about XBOX/PS/WII and online gaming? All these can easily take up hours or even a whole day.
And of course the biggest draw of all is online, the choices there are simply enormous. Many people are watching/downloading overseas production on online video streaming sites from any part of the world with a bit of searching. (be it legal/illegal sources , but that is besides the point)
Will young people be willing to force themselves to sit through an hour watching shows that they dont really like? Take myself for example, if the show on tv cant make me stay on the couch before the next commercial break, I would happily press the channel up down button on my pay tv remote. If I still cant find anything I like, I know I will definitely find something to entertain me on internet.
What I am really trying to say is that in this connected and globalised world, nobody will wait. Nobody will care if the company/industry is young or old, what they only care is what can be provided to them.
I would say that local tv, with the current quality, will die of a slow death. Those who make watching TV as their main form of entertainment are probably those above 45-50 (your parents, uncles & aunties etc etc) where they are unlikely (or at least very few) to be actively using Web 2.0 (blogs/social networks/wiki/online video streaming). Their choices of entertainment are probably the same for the last 20 years but really, in 10 years time do we want to end up having a TV industry where the bulk of audience to be above 60s while the younger ones are watching TV (or local productions) less than an hour per week?
Actually I am happy that you care whether or not we are watching local TV, but still ... the whole industry has to realize and change ... not just actors themselves.
As you have mentioned that you're YOUNG therefore, you have simply have got no idea how much our TV programs have deteriorated. Brain wash media? No thanks. Enough said.
January 11, 2010 3:24 AMSeriously, there isn't a need to care about those EdMW blog spammers.
January 11, 2010 7:23 AMThey themselves are just bunch of idiots who think they are very smart.
They always post girls' pictures from blogs, facebook, friendster and other sites they have googled from. They spammed girls' blog addresses and posted indecent/crude comments at their tagboards.
They think they are winners but actually they are born losers. Without Google search engine, they can't even do their 'CSI' skills.
Do inform the administrator of the forum to get them banned if you find any of the comments they made are too crude.
Andie, we can't stop people's mouth from critizising, but we can choose not to visit the particular forum...Don't bother, we are here to support our local artistes...
January 11, 2010 10:38 AMHaters are normally insecure about themselves. They are looking up at you, so they had to say such stuff to beat you down, to look down on you. Just take it with a pinch of salt. You must be doing something right to invite such people.
January 11, 2010 11:27 AMFirst of all, let me thank you for the compliment. I happen to be working as well. I have to give it to you though, hope you gain some fame this time round.
January 11, 2010 12:47 PM1. Whether a criticism/comment is constructive or not depends solely on YOU. If you take it positively and work your way out, it is constructive for you. So do you expect us to teach you how to act? so when your boss/manager tells you that you performed badly in xxx drama do you reply "hey, give me constructive comment, don just say I did badly. Tell me where I did badly, teach me, point me to the point itself"
Well, if you do, more good years for you then :)
2. Singaporean must support local industries? People are just choosing the better ones. Please tell me you are so supportive of local manufacturing industries that you only buy locally made products when choosing between import goods and local ones. Say that you only buy local designers clothings. Say when local airline is more expensive or rather, not worth to you COMPARED to others you still choose made in SG ones.
On the other hand, YOU should be reflecting when people opt for others. Still need us to teach you why is it so?
3. We donno wat bullshit u experienced. The line "I'm not giving up" is very not convincing as you are in a conflict of interest. Even if you wanna give up, you cant say because its your rice bowl. Im not saying that you are giving up, Im just saying its totally not convincing. Or maybe this is one of the bullshits that you faced? Why should consumer who are free to make their choice for better options opt for more inferior ones? It's not like we are protesting for local TV industry to close down, we just opt for what we value. If you open a fast food restaurant and some foreign fast food franchise is beating your business upside-down do you go out and blame locals that its because they are not patriotic enough? Don't be childish. Don't need us to teach you Darwin evolution theory. AND DONT MANIPULATE/FLAME PRATIOTISM HERE.
4. Is Little Nonya Kuih really that good? Well its up to everyone to judge. (sorry to those who don't know what is Little Nonya: its a drama series by mediacorp production)
5. I am not going to say you are a fxxk face. Well but whether you are one or not... erm...
YOU just do keep it constructive ALRIGHT?
JIAYOU (:
January 11, 2010 1:22 PMHello Andie,
January 11, 2010 5:21 PMFirst, let me just say that I think you're very courageous in an admirable manner to deal with the critic this person gave you as many artistes would prefer to stay politically right and friendly.
My point of view on this issue that as long as one matures and improves in whatever they are doing with their best effort, that already deserves applauds and encouragement.
Furthermore, these people that 'slams' you are not in your position and can't understand what artistes go through because they are not one. Just like how we'd never be able to understand doctors as we aren't, and we'd never be able to understand road sweepers cos we aren't.
But they are all equally useful and contributive to the society.
About the standard of TV, let's just say that we have more access to international productions and online screenings that we make subconscious comparisons without realising. Compared to the past, I feel that our productions have already improved with the limitations that our country face. Not to mention, the competition for shows since there are more artistes now.
Continue the good work done and I'm sure there will be a fair share of critics and encouragements but never lose heart!
I think the most important is to always go back to basics and ask yourself why you're acting, which I'm sure the passion that lies within.
Btw, I saw you and Bobby Tonelli at Bugis today!
just because i am singaporean doesn't mean i have to support local celebrity loh, you really take success for granted.
January 11, 2010 7:16 PMpeople are not and never will be interested in what shit you went through.
Results are EVERYTHING
anything else are excuses
just because of some harmless comments from EDMW.
January 12, 2010 2:51 PMcome on la~... grow up and get a life.
we as audience has the right to comments on a show/entertainer if they are bad/not up to standard.
January 12, 2010 3:23 PMyou as an entertainer should learn how to accept these comments and improve yourself.
Not rejecting reality and substitute it with you own.
looking on the bright side. at least there are comments for you to improve.
I don't understand the big hoo-hah over such an issue here. It's common that locals are getting bored of the drama series that the local media has been releasing in the recent years.Yes,we are partly to blame for making comparisons with the shows from other countries, where media over there may be more well-established than we do.But if the local media industry itself isn't doing anything to save audience, nothing will. This is a fast paced society, where only the strong wins.Obviously, media of the other nations is on the winning side.
January 12, 2010 7:36 PMno publicity is bad publicity :D
January 13, 2010 2:32 AMAmid all the negative remarks u kena received, I'm here to give some positives. I think u got great potential. Very down to earth & charming, been supporting u since Starsearch and I'm not gay btw lol, this show u appeal to both male and female, mass appeals are important in entertainment industry.
January 13, 2010 1:01 PMGot to admit I watched Fighting Spider for Ezann, can't blame me, she's too cute to resist but you actually performed well in Fighting Spider. Fighting Spider is actually quite a worthly local production too beside Little Nyonya.
Another reason I support you is with so many foreign talents in Mediacorp(e.g DYT), it's rare to see a local lad still willing to give local entertainment a shot so continue to work hard, believe in yourself, you will make it big soon.
TO Clara:
January 13, 2010 6:04 PMIt's nice to see there are some people who are as compassionate as you are still around, however, one day when you finally wake up from your ideal world, allow me to be the first to welcome you to planet earth.
A doctor and a road sweeper, equally useful and contributive to the society, hmmm...I enjoyed the good laugh =)
people always have to comment about everything. like you say, the main thing is that your not giving up and still trying hard.
January 14, 2010 2:13 AMyou know what? i think the best way to shut people up is to archive what you want and aim for. good luck on that. (:
Not to demoralise you or anything but Mediacorp is screwed from within. No amount of hard work or outstanding performance from you alone would improve the standards when everyone else in the company is so horrifyingly bad. No harm trying though =)
January 14, 2010 10:17 PMHmmm comparison between a road sweeper and a doctor.......nice. Don't worry you dance better than a chicken but I'm sure you can do better than an ape. Wahahahahaha
January 15, 2010 4:56 AMim a scriptwriter for local tv and i get what andy is saying whole heartedly. Well, i feel all we can do as creative artistes is to keep improving and keep learning. True, its tougher to keep audience glued to tv as in days of yore, so one has to change the mindset of what makes tv watchable these days. Sure you can watch it on dvd. You can tape it. You can watch it online. As long as its watched in SOME format or other, that should count. FIGHTING SPIDERS won an INTERNATIONAL award at SEOUL, a rare first for a local series. So even a humble little show, with a budget that is even less than that for Little Nonya, managed to win the attention of SEOUL judges.
January 17, 2010 12:18 AMI say there is always hope if one never gives up. You can only lose hope if you stop trying.
i for one, am not going to stop writing, and i know andie will not stop acting.
we will keep doing our fuckign best. And even if we fail, we will learn and rise and do again.
because that's what its all about.
end of day, i can say we tried.
and we are still trying.
andrew
Where is li nan xing, zhou chu ming, huang biren, xie shao guang, li min shun and those old time actors :(, those were the days that i stick and glued to the mediacorp TV 7pm,9pm drama shows, where are they now?!?!?!? Some of the drama shows that they act in can even make me drop my tears. Even now i only watch mediacorp drama which have those old time actors as the main character in it.
January 17, 2010 2:29 AMMediacorp has been going down ever since those old actors has went off.
But now everytime i turn on the TV now i see Ou Xuan, Felicia Chin, dai yangtian, elvin ng and those 7 princess etc etc and at 7pm always have those mediacorp+malaysia coop shows.
I can seriously tell you that when me and my family see this actors, we will switch channels immediately because these ppl cannot even speak chinese properly and act naturally and why are there so many china actors suddenly in mediacorp dramas? Does singapore not have enough China people already? Now singapore drama going towards China trend issit?
And shows like little nyonya nice?? i dun think so, with the amount of publicity from mediacorp ranging from daily advertisement to roadshows etc etc, if never get top rating den mediacorp really fail badly.
Anyway mediacorp has been going on a downhill slope ever since starhub cable tv was out.
And pls help me feedback to mediacorp to tell them to stop showing those repeated movie shows on sunday night liao!@! thx :(
I came here wanting to hurl insults in your face out of sheer boredom but you're pretty upbeat and civil about it, keep it up yeah (though personally i can't get myself to agree with you)
